At The Middle Floor, we offer a range of weekly classes in our city centre studios, ranging from dance to photography to pilates and more. Whether you're a complete beginner or professional, we have something for everyone!

Adult Beginners
Contemporary Dance

Monday

Adult Beginners Contemporary Dance is a dance class for anyone who wants to find their flow, meet other dance enthusiasts and enjoy their Monday evenings, while improving physical and mental wellbeing.

Focusing on the fundamentals of Contemporary Technique, the course will target a new movement theme each session, blend it with some funky tunes and classic moves and leave you feeling motivated for the rest of the week.

Adult Beginners Contemporary Dance is open to all and welcomes dancers of all backgrounds, ages and levels of experience.

This class is taught by Emma Read. Emma is a dancer and dance teacher from Scotland. She has taught in a variety of settings, which started during her professional training at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance.

Sustainable Photography

Studio 2

Film is making a comeback everyone! Let’s step into the exciting world of sustainable photography and explore eco-conscious practices that are reshaping the film revival movement. 

This is a hands-on class that will guide you through every step of creating stunning images with minimal environmental impact. Learn the chemistry behind eco-friendly ingredients and brewing your own caffenol (a sustainable alternative to traditional film developers). Whether you're a beginner, enthusiast or a seasoned photographer, this course offers a fresh perspective on photography that aligns creativity with sustainability. 

This class will be taught by Georgie Holt as part of our THRIVE Programme. Georgie is a Leeds-living artist working in mixed media, creating zines with illustrations, photography and poems.

Tuesday

Gaga/people

Gaga is the movement language developed by Ohad Naharin throughout many years, parallel to his work as a world-renowned choreographer. Gaga classes are predicated on a deep activation of the body and physical sensations. We provide a framework for discovering and strengthening the body and adding flexibility, stamina, agility, and skills including coordination and efficiency while stimulating the senses and the imagination.

Gaga/people classes offer a framework for users to connect to their bodies and imaginations, experience physical sensations, improve their flexibility and stamina, exercise their agility and explosive power, and enjoy the pleasure of movement in a welcoming, accepting atmosphere.

Gaga/people is taught by Matteo Marfoglia. Matteo has an extensive career as a performer, choreographer, director and educator. Since 2021, he has been the Director and Programme Leader for VERVE (NSCD).

Wednesday

Dynamic Floor

Advanced

Dynamic Floor are advanced-level floor work classes aiming to develop fluidity and movement rhythms. We will work on the coordination and physicality of movements to understand how to organise our bodies in order to enter and exit the floor. We will use our weight and momentum to move in an efficient-effortless way without disrupting the flow of movement.

Mara Osorio is an interdisciplinary artist/mover from Chile based in Leeds. She recently graduated from Northern School of Contemporary Dance with a Dance BA (HONS) in Contemporary Dance. At the same time, to complement her studies she took part in a 6-months online teaching mentorship programme with Alleyne Dance Company.

Adult Intermediate Contemporary

Intermediate

Adult Intermediate Contemporary Dance is for people looking to take a step up to improve their dance skills and are ready to take a deeper dive into contemporary dance and performance! The first half of the class focuses on an active warm-up to prepare your body, followed by dynamic and physically engaging centre work inspired by Cunningham and release techniques.

As well as refining our dance skills; we can develop our confidence, embrace the fun of dancing and meet new people!

Adult Intermediate Contemporary Dance is taught by Euan Stephen. Euan (He/They) is a freelance dance artist based in Leeds. He trained at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance, graduating his MA in August 2023.

Introduction to Lino Print

Lino printing, also known as linocut or lino cutting, is a traditional printmaking technique that involves cutting a design into a block of linoleum and then transferring the design to paper or fabric. 

During these workshops we will design, carve, and print unique pieces of art inspired by our relationships to identity, cultural heritage and celebration! This workshop is about more than learning a skill; it’s a space to explore identity, connect with others, and celebrate through your creativity! 

This event is for BIPOC, created to centre our relationships to identity, heritage and celebration of this. Together we will create art that is an expression of resistance and encourage connection and storytelling through patterns. This class is taught by Saba Siddiqui as part of our THRIVE programme.

An Introduction to Clay Sculpture & Mold Making

This unique course will guide you through the process of creating your own individual molds and sculptures using Plaster of Paris, a versatile and eco-friendly material. Together, these individual creations will form a stunning collective sculpture, which will be exhibited at the end of the course.

This class is perfect for artists, creatives, and anyone passionate about sustainability and collaboration in art. Whether you’re a seasoned sculptor or new to the world of sculpture, you’ll gain valuable skills and insights in a supportive, experimental environment.

This class will be taught by Lauren Eagan as part of our THRIVE Programme. Lauren Eagan is Irish artist now living and working in Bradford and Leeds. She has a BA Hons in Fine Art Painting, two postgraduate qualifications and a Masters in Visual Arts and Contemporary Practice.

Thursday

Pilates

Studio 1

What Level?

This Pilates class is great for all levels of experience.

The class will include traditional and non traditional Pilates techniques. Through this class, students will gain knowledge of the six principles of Pilates, and have improved posture and body coordination. You will be able to move through classes more freely and feel how your bodies have developed strength and flexibility. She is passionate about teaching people the importance of caring for our bodies and taking time for yourself.

This class is taught by Hannah Durkan. Hannah is a dance artist that received her MA from Northern School of Contemporary Dance. After graduating she received her Pilates training through HFE.
