Queer Multi-Media Portraiture

Join us for a brand new course where you will learn to create your own multi-media portrait!

During this course, you will develop your painting, collage, and sewing skills. You will work with new materials to create beautiful portraits and images reflective of your personal history.

Specifically, we will be exploring the concept of ‘Queer Bodies’ throughout this course, examining changes in our personal appearance, transitional change, confidence, and age through collaging. I will be encouraging participants to bring collections of their own photos for this case; however, this is not compulsory if you are uncomfortable with this.

You do not have to be queer to attend these workshops, just comfortable discussing ideas of changing bodies and our relationships to physical appearance.

Accessibility: The Middle Floor is a queer friendly space! As we are the space situated above Wharf Chambers, please note we are unfortunately not wheelchair accessible (one flight of stairs).

Class teacher Maya will be providing accessible alternatives for each step of the process on this course such as: using a sewing machine instead of hand sewing; proving ‘large’ crafting tools suitable for those with mobility and hand dexterity issues and proving visual and written printed aids for each step of the process.

If you are interested in attending but worried about accessibility, please reach out to us on middlefloor.leeds@gmail.com and we will be happy to discuss options with you.

What should I bring?

This class will have all materials supplied – however due to the nature of the art piece (ie making artwork from your own photos, emotional possessions etc), participants will be asked to bring some items with them. If you are not comfortable using your own photos or objects that is okay, as class teacher Maya will also be proving alternatives. If you require your images printed, please send to Maya one week ahead of class (contact information provided after booking).
